In the cornerstone, visible to the right of the main door, was a small tin box containing what appears to be a dedication program and perhaps a ballot. It was decided to hire a lady teacher, Miss Esther Benecke. The School was located at the southwest corner of intersection of Washington and Ellis Streets, which is now the backyard of the parsonage. The first school board members were: Fred Kloppe, William Bachman and George Horn. Because of the large enrollment in August 1948, classes were to be held in the Church basement the next year. A new, two-story brick building would be constructed in 1948. The picture was taken from St. John's 1970 Church Directory. | | St. John's Lutheran School - (1995) The St. John's Lutheran School in New Berlin is located on Gibson Street between Olive and Washington Streets. The two-story building was damaged in the 1961 tornado which struck New Berlin. The kids are playing around the flagpole, which had some debris wrapped around it during the storm. A cross is barely visible on top of the school.
